Lance Armstrong is a former winner of 7 Tours de France from 1999-2005 who was subsequently stripped of hit titles and banned from competitive cycling by the UCI and competitive triathlon events by the World Triathlon Corporation .

Lance started his career as an amateur triathlete as a teenager before becoming a competitive cyclist for the Motorola cycling team in 1992. Lance was considered an average professional cyclist during his tenure with Motorola. In 1996 he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, symptoms of which he ignored, which at the time of diagnosis had spread to various parts of his body, including his brain. Lance was given a low chance of survival and was given chemotherapy and surgeries to remove the tumors.

He returned to competitive cycling in 1998, joining the US Postal Cycling Team, and won the Tour de France for the first time in 1999, winning the prologue and individual time trials, considered suspicious by some considering his cancer illness and previous performance as a cyclist. In 2013, Lance finally admitted to doping throughout his professional cycling career, including the use of EPOs and blood transfusions in a famous interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Doping Allegations[]

Lance has faced doping allegations throughout his career and was criticized for working with controversial sports Dr. Michele Ferrari and investigated by journalist David Walsh who published LA Confidentiel. Former teammate Tyler Hamilton who was also convicted of doping and stripped of his Olympic gold medal, published detailed accounts of how Lance and the US Postal cycling team participated in a sophisticated doping regimen over many years to help Lance win his Tour de France victories, in his book The Secret Race and on CBS's 60 Minutes .

Doping Conviction and Ban[]

In June 2012 the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) accused Lance of doping based on his 2009 & 2010 blood samples and was prepared to present its case and allegedly prepared to call multiple former teammates of Lance to testify against him including Levi Leipheimer , Floyd Landis , Tyler Hamilton and George Hincapie and subsequently banned him from sports sanctioned buy the World Anti-Dpoing Agency (WADA) .

Notable Achievements[]

Lance is the founder of the Lance Armstrong Foundation which is best known as one of the most successful cancer awareness and support foundations worldwide, and made the popular yellow Livestrong bracelets for cancer awareness.  The foundation was eventually renamed Livestrong Foundation to disassociate itself from Lance Armstring and Lance Armstrong resigned from any official capacity with the foundation.
