Asafa Powell was born November 23, 1982 in Spanish Town, Jamaica. In high school, Powell was an average sprinter at best, often finishing in the middle of the pack in the 100m sprint. He took the notice of Coach Stephen Francis in 2001 and won the boys U-20 100m event in 10:50 seconds that summer.
Powell, who has been besieged with injury throughout his career, recorded a record number of sub-10 second finishes in the 100m dash prior to testing positive for the drug Oxilofrine on July 14, 2013. He's currently suspended from competition until his sentence is handed down on April 10, 2014.
Doping Allegations[]
On July 14, 2013, Powell and sprinter Sherone Simpson tested positive for the stimulant drug, Oxilofrine which is banned for use during competition. It is believed the stimulant was included in a supplement Powell was taking called Epiphany D1. Despite the restriction of Oxilofrine during competition, Biochemist Wayne McLaugh-lin, a professor in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies, Mona, and director of Caribbean Toxicology stated that, "...the Jamaican sprinter did not gain an advantage while competing at the National Championships with oxilofrine in his system."
